  1. What is the Enigma?
The Enigma is a ciphering device used primarily during World War II by Nazi Germany. The Enigma Simulator found on this site serves to simulate that device as best as possible on a computer. To learn more about the history or theory behind the real Enigma machine, Wikipedia has an excellent article at http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Enigma_machine.

  2. How do I use Enigma Simulator (in a nutshell)?
If you would like a complete, step-by-step example, please visit the Example page.

First set all the settings as you would like them to be. Remember these settings, as you will not be able to decrypt your message without them. Then, either type (slowly) on your keyboard or use your mouse to click the typewriter-like keys in the main window. Each time you type or click a letter, the corresponding encrypted letter will light up. Either remember the sequence of lights that light up or optionally open up the Schreibmax window (under the window menu in the menu bar) so that the encrypted letters will be written on screen.
To decrypt your message, first set all of the settings back to what they were before you began typing your message. If you are sending your message to someone else, you must devise a way for them to know what settings to use. Then, type in your encrypted message and your original message should be outputted. Congratulations! You have encrypted and decrypted a message just like the Germans did during World War II!

  4. What does "Rip Tape" do in the Schreibmax window?
Clicking "Rip Tape" will clear the letters in the Schreibmax window (essentially it 'rips' the tape off).
